Southern Style Green Beans

Whether you're throwing a backyard barbecue or longing for a taste of Southern comfort in your own kitchen, these green beans are destined to be a family hit.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb fresh green beans, trimmed

  • 4 slices bacon, diced

  • 1 small onion, diced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 cup chicken broth

  • 1/4 cup water

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste

  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, or to taste

  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

  • 1 tablespoon butter

  • Lemon wedges, for serving

Directions:

  1. Cook the diced bacon in a large skillet over medium heat until crispy. Set aside the bacon, retaining the flavorful drippings in the pan.

  2. Add the diced onion to the bacon drippings and sauté until softened, approximately 3-4 minutes. Introduce minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

  3. Incorporate the trimmed green beans into the pan along with chicken broth and water. Season with salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using), ensuring an even distribution.

  4. Bring the liquid to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pan and allow the green beans to cook for about 15-20 minutes until tender but still crisp, stirring occasionally.

  5. Once the green beans reach the desired tenderness, uncover the pan and stir in the cooked bacon pieces and butter. Let the flavors meld together for an additional 2-3 minutes.

Enhance...

...the presentation and flavor profile by garnishing the green beans with optional lemon wedges. Squeezing fresh lemon juice over the dish adds a citrusy brightness that complements the savory elements.

...the aroma and taste by incorporating fresh herbs like thyme, rosemary, or parsley to the green beans before serving.

Sprinkle crispy fried onions or breadcrumbs over the green beans before serving to add a satisfying crunch.

Keep stirring, keep savoring, and always let your taste buds lead the way!
