Traffic Concert Santa Monica in 1972

Updated: Mar 3, 2023

In 1972, the legendary British rock band Traffic performed at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium to an enthusiastic crowd. The band was touring in support of their latest album, "The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys," which had been released the previous year to critical acclaim.

The concert began with the band's signature sound of Steve Winwood's soulful vocals and Hammond organ, accompanied by Jim Capaldi's drums, Chris Wood's flute and saxophone, and Ric Grech's bass guitar.

The band opened with "Glad" from their 1970 album "John Barleycorn Must Die," which set the tone for the rest of the show.

One of the highlights of the concert was the extended jam session during the title track of their latest album, "The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys." The band members showcased their impressive musicianship as they weaved through intricate rhythms and melodies.

Another standout moment was Steve Winwood's solo rendition of "Can't Find My Way Home," a haunting ballad that showcased his soulful voice and songwriting skills. The song was originally featured on the band's self-titled album from 1968 and had become a fan favorite.

Throughout the concert, Traffic kept the energy high with a mix of classic hits and newer material. They played fan favorites such as "Dear Mr. Fantasy" and "40,000 Headmen," as well as lesser-known tracks like "Light Up or Leave Me Alone" from their 1971 album "The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys."

The concert ended with an encore performance of "Feelin' Alright," a song that had become a rock anthem and was famously covered by Joe Cocker. The band left the stage to rapturous applause from the crowd, who had witnessed a masterclass in rock and roll performance.

The Santa Monica concert was just one stop on a tour that saw Traffic play to sold-out crowds across North America. The band's unique blend of rock, jazz, and soul had won them a legion of fans, and their live performances had become the stuff of legend.

Today, Traffic's music continues to inspire new generations of musicians, and their legacy lives on in the hearts of fans who were lucky enough to witness their electrifying performances, such as the one at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in 1972.
