The Story Behind the Legendary 1952 Jam Session Album by Charlie Parker. Discover why this album is not only a great example of jazz, but also a great example of art.
In 1952, Norman Granz, a jazz impresario and record producer, had an ambitious idea: to bring together some of the finest jazz musicians of his time and let them play freely in a studio, capturing the spontaneity and excitement of a live jam session. Among the participants were three legendary alto saxophonists: Charlie Parker, Benny Carter, and Johnny Hodges, as well as two tenor saxophonists: Ben Webster and Flip Phillips. The rhythm section consisted of Oscar Peterson on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and J.C. Heard on drums.
The result was a two-volume album titled Norman Granz' Jam Session, later reissued as Charlie Parker: Jam Session, featuring four tracks: "Jam Blues", a swinging blues tune; "What Is This Thing Called Love?", a Cole Porter standard; "Ballad Medley", a collection of romantic songs chosen by each soloist; and "Funky Blues", a slow and mellow blues number.
The album showcases the diverse styles and personalities of the saxophonists, from Parker's fiery bebop lines to Carter's elegant melodies, from Hodges' soulful expression to Webster's breathy tone, from Phillips' robust sound to Peterson's virtuosic accompaniment. The album also reveals the mutual respect and admiration among the musicians, who trade solos and riffs with ease and grace.
The album is considered one of the finest examples of jazz improvisation ever recorded, and a testament to Parker's genius and influence. It is also a rare opportunity to hear some of the greatest jazz legends playing together in a relaxed and informal setting, creating music that is timeless and thrilling.
