Between the Lines: The Lost Album of John Lennon

The Secret Behind John Lennon's Unreleased Album

John Lennon was one of the most influential and prolific songwriters of the 20th century, but not all of his musical creations saw the light of day. Between 1975 and 1980, Lennon recorded several demos and sketches for a new album that he never completed. The album was tentatively titled Between the Lines, and it contained some of his most personal and experimental songs.

Lennon had taken a break from the music industry after the release of his covers album Rock 'n' Roll in 1975. He wanted to focus on his family life with Yoko Ono and their son Sean, who was born that year. He also faced legal troubles with his former manager Allen Klein and the US immigration authorities, who threatened to deport him. However, Lennon did not stop writing songs during this period. He kept a tape recorder at home and recorded ideas whenever inspiration struck.

Some of these songs were later released on posthumous albums such as Milk and Honey and Anthology, but many others remained unheard by the public. Between the Lines was supposed to be Lennon's comeback album in 1976, but he decided to postpone it indefinitely. He said in a French TV interview that he had "three-quarters of the new album on scraps of paper" , but he was not satisfied with them. He also felt that he had nothing new to say to his fans.

The songs that were intended for Between the Lines reflect Lennon's state of mind at the time. They range from playful and humorous ("Tennessee", "Popcorn") to introspective and melancholic ("Nobody Told Me", "Real Love"). Some of them are political and social commentary ("Serve Yourself", "I'm Stepping Out"), while others are love songs for Yoko ("Grow Old With Me", "Dear Yoko"). Some of them are also influenced by his interest in Eastern philosophy and meditation ("Borrowed Time", "Life Begins at 40").

Between the Lines is a fascinating glimpse into the creative process and the inner world of John Lennon. It shows that he was still evolving as an artist and a human being, even when he was away from the spotlight. It is a shame that he never got to finish it, but it is also a testament to his legacy that his unfinished songs still resonate with listeners today.
