How to Decarboxylate Cannabis

Updated: Jul 6

From Flower to Power: Mastering Cannabis Decarboxylation

Materials:

  • Cannabis flower (amount as desired)

  • Baking sheet

  • Parchment paper or aluminum foil

  • Oven

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven: to 240°F (115°C). This temperature is optimal for converting THCA to THC without degrading the cannabinoids.

  2. Prepare the Cannabis: Break up the cannabis buds into smaller pieces using your hands or a grinder. Aim for an even consistency, but don’t grind too finely.

  3. Line the Baking Sheet: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Spread the cannabis evenly across the baking sheet in a single layer.

  4. Cover the Cannabis: Cover the cannabis with another sheet of aluminum foil. This helps to retain the cannabinoids and terpenes during the heating process.

  5. Bake the Cannabis: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven. Bake for 30-40 minutes. Stir the cannabis every 10 minutes to ensure even heating. The cannabis should turn a light brownish color and have a toasted, aromatic smell. Be careful not to overcook it.

  6. Cool the Cannabis: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the cannabis cool completely. It is now decarboxylated and ready to be used in infusions or other recipes.

Tips:

  • Temperature Control: It's important to maintain the oven temperature at 240°F (115°C) to avoid burning the cannabis. If your oven runs hot, you may want to use a lower temperature and extend the baking time slightly.

  • Even Heating: Stirring the cannabis periodically during baking helps ensure that all parts of the cannabis are evenly decarboxylated.

Once decarboxylated, your cannabis is ready to be used in various recipes or for making cannabis-infused oils and butters. Store any unused decarboxylated cannabis in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.

Cannabis-Infused Coconut Oil Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup coconut oil

  • 1 cup ground cannabis (decarboxylated)

Equipment:

  • Baking sheet

  • Aluminum foil

  • Saucepan or slow cooker

  • Cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer

  • Glass jar with lid for storage

Instructions:

  1. Decarboxylate the Cannabis:

  • Preheat your oven to 240°F (115°C).

  • Spread the ground cannabis evenly on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil.

  • Cover the cannabis with another sheet of aluminum foil.

  • Bake for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally to ensure even heating. This process activates the THC in the cannabis.

  1. Combine the Coconut Oil and Cannabis:

  • In a saucepan, combine the coconut oil and decarboxylated cannabis. Use a ratio of 1:1 for oil to cannabis, but this can be adjusted based on your desired potency.

  • If using a slow cooker, set it to low. If using a saucepan, use the lowest heat setting.

  1. Infuse the Oil:

  • Allow the mixture to simmer on low heat for 2-3 hours. Stir occasionally and make sure the mixture does not come to a boil.

  • If using a slow cooker, you can infuse the oil for up to 4-6 hours for a stronger infusion. Be sure to stir occasionally.

  1. Strain the Oil:

  • After the infusion time, let the mixture cool slightly.

  • Place a cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer over a glass jar or bowl.

  • Carefully pour the mixture through the cheesecloth to strain out the plant material. Squeeze the cheesecloth to extract as much oil as possible.

  1. Store the Oil:

  • Transfer the strained oil to a glass jar with a lid.

  • Store the cannabis-infused coconut oil in a cool, dark place. It can also be stored in the refrigerator for longer shelf life.

Dosage Note:

  • The potency of your cannabis-infused oil will depend on the strength of your cannabis and the ratio of oil to cannabis used. It’s important to calculate the dosage accurately, especially if using the oil in edibles.

Safety Reminder:

  • Keep cannabis-infused products out of reach of children and pets.

  • Label your cannabis-infused products clearly to avoid accidental consumption.

This infused coconut oil can be used in a variety of recipes, from baked goods to savory dishes. Enjoy responsibly!

Keep stirring, keep savoring, and always let your taste buds lead the way!
