Jared Kushner's private equity firm concealed the origins of Saudi-backed funds.
Jared Kushner, who is a senior advisor and son-in-law to former US President Donald Trump, is known to have a close relationship with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Kushner was reportedly instrumental in developing the Trump administration's relationship with Saudi Arabia and played a key role in cementing the ties between the two countries.
In 2017, Kushner made an unannounced visit to Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, and met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The two reportedly had a close and cordial relationship, and it was said that they had formed a bond over their similar ages and interests.
Kushner's relationship with the Crown Prince has been the subject of criticism and controversy, particularly in light of the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed in the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul in 2018. Some have questioned Kushner's relationship with the Crown Prince in light of the murder and have raised concerns about the influence that the Saudi Arabian government may have had on US foreign policy during the Trump administration.
Despite the criticism, however, Kushner has continued to maintain his close relationship with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and the two are believed to remain in regular contact.
The New York Times reported in April 2022 that Kushner — who worked on Middle East policy under former President Donald Trump — was able to secure over $2.5 billion in funds for his company Affinity Partners.
Kushner also reportedly tried to leverage his relationship with other Middle Eastern countries like the United Arab Emirates to secure funds for his firm, but this came with little success.
In 2018, MBS reportedly bragged that Kushner was "in his pocket."
