When Identity Is Denied

Affirming Children's Identities: Why It Matters for Their Well-Being; by Belle Webb

Forcing a child to reject their true identity can have serious negative consequences for their mental and emotional well-being. Children may experience confusion, shame, and self-doubt if they are forced to deny who they truly are. It can also lead to long-term psychological damage, including depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts.

For example, if a child is transgender and is forced to deny their true gender identity, they may feel a deep sense of discomfort and alienation from their own body. They may experience gender dysphoria, which is a psychological condition characterized by a strong sense of distress or discomfort caused by the incongruence between one's gender identity and assigned sex at birth.

Similarly, if a child is forced to hide their sexual orientation or gender identity, they may feel isolated and alone, which can lead to feelings of depression and anxiety. They may also face discrimination and harassment from others, which can further exacerbate their mental health issues.

In summary, forcing a child to reject their true identity can have serious consequences for their mental and emotional well-being, and it is important to support and affirm children as they explore their own identities.
