Protecting the Unborn but Neglecting LGBTQ Youth

A Double Standard of Compassion: Pro-Life Advocacy and Neglected LGBTQ+ Youth...

In recent years, a contentious debate has raged across the United States, centered on the issue of abortion. Advocates for stricter anti-abortion laws often frame their arguments as protecting the lives of the unborn. Yet, there exists a disturbing and unsettling disconnect between those who champion anti-abortion laws in the name of safeguarding the unborn and their apparent indifference when it comes to protecting the lives and rights of LGBTQ+ youth. This article aims to shed light on this perplexing contradiction, highlighting the importance of consistency in the fight for life and rights.

The Battle for the Unborn

Proponents of anti-abortion laws emphasize the sanctity of life, asserting that every fetus has a right to life. They argue that it is their moral obligation to protect the most vulnerable, even if it means restricting a woman's right to choose. While the protection of unborn lives is indeed an important cause, the same fervor for safeguarding life should extend to all stages of life, including the lives of LGBTQ+ youth.

LGBTQ+ Youth at Risk

It is an unfortunate reality that LGBTQ+ youth face significant challenges, including higher rates of mental health issues, homelessness, and suicide. These challenges often result from societal discrimination, family rejection, and a lack of supportive environments. According to a 2019 study by the Trevor Project, LGBTQ+ youth are more than four times as likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. These alarming statistics underscore the pressing need for support and protection for this vulnerable population.

The Disconnect

The unsettling disconnect between the fervor for protecting the unborn and the indifference towards LGBTQ+ youth's rights and lives becomes evident when one examines the policies and actions of some anti-abortion activists and lawmakers. While claiming to advocate for the sanctity of life, they often oppose policies and measures aimed at protecting LGBTQ+ youth, such as comprehensive sex education, anti-discrimination laws, and support for LGBTQ+ youth in schools.

Lack of Comprehensive Sex Education: One way to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies, and thus, the need for abortions, is through comprehensive sex education. However, many anti-abortion advocates oppose such programs, favoring abstinence-only education, which often fails to provide young people with the necessary information to make informed decisions about their sexual health.

Conversion Therapy: Some anti-abortion activists and lawmakers do not condemn or actively work to ban conversion therapy—a practice that has been widely discredited and can cause significant harm to LGBTQ+ youth. Conversion therapy attempts to change an individual's sexual orientation or gender identity and has been linked to increased rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide among those subjected to it.

Opposition to Anti-Discrimination Measures: Anti-abortion advocates have often opposed anti-discrimination measures that protect LGBTQ+ individuals, including LGBTQ+ youth. This opposition can contribute to an environment in which these youth feel marginalized, unsupported, and at risk of discrimination.

Resistance to LGBTQ+ Inclusive Education: There have been instances where anti-abortion activists and lawmakers resist efforts to include LGBTQ+ topics in school curricula, even though inclusive education can promote understanding, empathy, and acceptance among students.

In conclusion, the unsettling disconnect between those who champion anti-abortion laws in the name of safeguarding the unborn and their apparent indifference when it comes to protecting the lives and rights of LGBTQ+ youth raises important questions about the consistency and sincerity of their values. If the sanctity of life truly matters, it should extend to all lives, including those of LGBTQ+ youth who face unique challenges and vulnerabilities.

It is imperative that society recognizes and rectifies this disconnect. A more compassionate and consistent approach would involve supporting comprehensive sex education, banning conversion therapy, advocating for anti-discrimination measures, and embracing LGBTQ+ inclusive education. By doing so, we can work toward a society where all lives are genuinely valued and protected, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, and where the rights and well-being of all youth are safeguarded.
