Government affects our lives daily. It tells us how fast to drive. It regulates our commerce. It protects us from foreign and domestic strife. Yet we rarely take time to consider its basic function. However, if republicans gain power Christian dogma may just become the bases for our laws.
The Supreme Court is heavy with those that strongly believe the bible should be used for guidance when making laws. Republicans know, those that believe in such things are easy to manipulate, that playing to the belief system of the Christian community they can gain their support.
HOW DO YOU KNOW THE GOVERNMENT IS "ESTABLISHING RELIGION"?
In 1971, the Supreme Court decided Lemon v. Kurtzman which created three tests for determining whether a particular government act or policy unconstitutionally promotes religion.
The Lemon test says that in order to be constitutional, a policy must:
Have a non-religious purpose;
Not end up promoting or favoring any set of religious beliefs; and
Not overly involve the government with religion.
Our country's founders -- who were of different religious backgrounds themselves -- knew the best way to protect religious liberty was to keep the government out of religion. So, they created the First Amendment -- to guarantee the separation of church and state. This fundamental freedom is a major reason why the U.S. has managed to avoid a lot of the religious conflicts that have torn so many other nations apart.
Our Country is beginning to look more like an Islamic State, only instead of sharia law it will be Christian Dogma. Then the fighting will start, like in the middle east, different religious sects will be fighting for control of the government. This is why our founding fathers drafted the First Amendment, to guarantee the separation of church and state, and to eliminate the fighting.
This fundamental freedom is a major reason why the U.S. has managed to avoid a lot of the religious conflicts that have torn so many other nations apart. But that may all come to an end soon. Christians already have control of the Supreme Court. If republican gain any more power, our laws will change to favor the Christian support base. It is already happening. Abortion Laws being rewritten, the rights of gay and transgender people are coming into question. I can't imagine what our country will look like under the thumb of Christianity?
Guess we'll have to read the bible to find out. Sooner or later, it will be required reading if we let republicans remain in power.
Your Right to Religious Freedom | American Civil Liberties Union (aclu.org)
The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment prohibits government from encouraging or promoting ("establishing") religion in any way. That's why we don't have an official religion of the United States. But a Religious Freedom Act will in fact mean that a religion, that being Christianity since the Act favors it, will influence our laws. You see it in new abortion laws, and gay civil rights. Both will be influenced heavily by Christian beliefs.
If this happens it will be the Evangelical Christians in charge. You can bet, just like in the middle east, religious fractions will be fighting one another, and we will all be affected by it. Say good bye to Hollywood, say good bye to American way of life.
