The Challenge of Surrendering Independence

Relying on someone else for basic needs is a difficult concept to accept, especially when independence has been such a central value in one's life.
For years, I have taken pride in managing my own affairs—driving, writing, handling finances, and making decisions without needing assistance. The thought of losing this autonomy feels like a loss of identity itself, as if the freedom to make choices defines who I am.
True independence is not just the ability to act freely, but the sense of self that comes with it. Losing that freedom feels like losing a part of who we are.
It’s not only the fear of physical limitations that causes unease; it’s the unsettling idea of no longer being in control of the everyday aspects that have long shaped my existence. This fear runs deep because independence is not just a habit, but a cornerstone of my sense of self.
