Tucked away in the walls, she had everything she needed—a warm little nest, the hum of the house to keep her company, and the delicious smells of food wafting through the air each evening.
In a cozy kitchen, behind the walls and under the floorboards, lived a little mouse named Milly. Milly was clever and quick, always staying hidden from the humans who lived in the house. She had a tiny, secret home in the wall, where she felt safe and cozy. But Milly had one very important rule: never get caught.
You see, Milly loved living in the kitchen, but if the humans ever saw her, she would have to leave. The big, grumpy cat would surely chase her away, and the humans might get rid of her altogether. So Milly made sure to stay out of sight—especially when the kitchen was full of delicious food.
Milly didn’t want to take food from the cupboards or the counters. That would be too risky. No, she was smarter than that. Every night, after the humans went to bed, Milly would sneak out from her tiny hole in the wall, wearing an old doll’s apron she had found in a forgotten box. She grabbed her tiny broom, the perfect tool for sweeping up crumbs without leaving a trace. Milly’s mission was simple: to find the little scraps of food that had fallen to the floor, and clean up every last one without ever being seen.
She would start near the table, where the humans had eaten their dinner. Bits of bread, crumbs of cheese, and stray peas would often fall to the floor, just waiting for Milly to gather them. She would sweep them carefully into a pile, nibble on a few tasty morsels, and then tidy up the mess, making sure everything looked as neat as it had before.
Sometimes, Milly would climb up to the counter, where there might be a bit of leftover bread or a slice of fruit that had been forgotten. She would nibble a little, always careful not to take too much, and then sweep up the crumbs that had fallen around the counter. Her tiny broom was the perfect tool, helping her clean up every speck of dust, every crumb that would otherwise go unnoticed.
Milly was always very careful. She knew the humans would never be happy if they knew a mouse was living in their kitchen. And if she ever got caught, she’d have to find a new place to live. So she made sure to be quiet, to move swiftly and silently, and to always leave the kitchen cleaner than she had found it.
She didn’t need to take much. A few crumbs here, a tiny bit of food there—enough to fill her little tummy without drawing attention. Milly was happy with her quiet, secret life in the kitchen. Each night, she cleaned up after herself, made sure to stay hidden, and lived a long, happy life in the walls of the cozy kitchen.
As Milly scurried back to her home at the end of each night, she felt proud. She had found her food, kept the kitchen clean, and stayed hidden from the humans. They would never know that Milly, the stealthy little mouse in the doll's apron, was the one making the kitchen just a little bit tidier every night. And that made her feel like she had the best secret in the world.
