This reflection explores the meaning and value of civility.

Civility is a quality that seems to be increasingly rare in our world today. It is the art of treating others with respect and courtesy, even in the face of disagreement or conflict. Civility is not just about being polite or well-mannered; it is a deeper reflection of our values and our ability to live in harmony with one another.

One of the things that strikes me about civility is how much it can transform a conversation or interaction. When we approach others with civility, we create an atmosphere of trust and openness. We signal that we are willing to listen and engage with others in a respectful way, even if we don't agree with them. This, in turn, creates the possibility for meaningful dialogue and the exchange of ideas.

On the other hand, when civility is absent, conversations quickly devolve into a contest of wills. People become defensive and hostile, and communication breaks down. Instead of listening to one another, we dig in our heels and try to shout louder than the other person. This is not only unproductive but can also be damaging to our relationships and our communities.

Of course, there are times when it can be difficult to maintain civility. When we feel passionately about a topic, it can be tempting to let our emotions get the best of us. But I believe that even in these moments, we can strive to be civil. We can acknowledge our own feelings while still showing respect for others. We can listen to their perspectives and try to find common ground. We can disagree without being disagreeable.

Ultimately, civility is a choice that we make in our interactions with others. It requires us to put aside our own egos and to focus on building relationships based on mutual respect and understanding. In a world that often seems divided and polarized, civility is more important than ever. It is a reminder that we are all human beings with our own experiences and perspectives, and that we have much to gain by working together with civility and kindness.
